From Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁(y)- (“to suck”). Compare τιτθός (titthós, “breast”), θῆλυς (thêlus, “female”), θηλή (thēlḗ, “teat”), θεῖος (theîos, “uncle”), τήθη (tḗthē, “grandmother”) and τιθήνη (tithḗnē, “wet nurse”).
