σφεδανός
Ancient Greek
Etymology
The word shares the formation with ἐδανός (edanós), ἰδανός (idanós), σκεπανός (skepanós) and στεγανός (steganós). Together with σφοδρός (sphodrós, “violent”), it may reflect a heteroclitic "r/n" stem, but this is uncertain. Possible Greek cognates are σφαδάζω (sphadázō, “to be strongly moved or excited”) and σφενδόνη (sphendónē, “sling”).
