πύλιγξ
Ancient Greek
Etymology
Clearly related to πυλεών (puleṓn, “wreath”); on this basis, a pre-form *πύλος (*púlos) has been assumed. This *πύλος (*púlos) is then connected with Sanskrit पुलक (pulaka, “erection or bristling of the hairs of the body”), पुलस्ति (pulasti, “wearing the hair straight”) and पुल (pula, “horripilation”). From Iranian, Kurdish [script needed] (kūr, “hair of the head”) is adduced, and from Celtic Irish ulcha (“beard”). However, Mayrhofer doubts this connections; in fact the suffix -ιγγ- may rather point to a Pre-Greek origin.
