Pre-Greek. A recontruction *pnew-reh₂ from Proto-Indo-European *pnew- (“to breath”) would leave the lambda unexplained (although compare πλεύμων (pleúmōn, “lung”)). (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.)
