Formation like ἀηδώ (aēdṓ) and τυτώ (tutṓ). Probably onomatopoeic like πιππίζω (pippízō, “to pipe, chirp”) and Sanskrit पिप्पका (pippakā, “kind of bird”). Compare also πῖπος (pîpos, “young piping bird”).
