From Proto-Indo-European *perḱ- (“motley, coloured”). Cognate with Old Irish erc (“perch, salmon”) (from Proto-Celtic *ɸerkos) and Proto-Germanic *furhnō (“trout”). Related also to περκνός (perknós, “dusky”) and πέρκος (pérkos, “kind of hawk”).
