Etymology 1
From Turkish baba + ending -ς[1] or onomatopoeic child word[2]. The ancient hypocoristic for πατήρ (patḗr, “father”) was πάππας (páppas). Unrelated is the mediaeval βάβω (bábō) / μπάμπω (mpámpō) ("grandma, old woman"), from Slavic babo.
