Etymology

Borrowed from Old Persian 𐎶𐎰𐎡𐏁𐎫 (m-θ-i-š-t /Maθišta-/, literally greatest, supreme), itself from an older form *Masišta-, a superlative of *masa- (great). Might originally have been a title maθišta pasā tanūm (the greatest after myself (the king))[1].
