From Proto-Indo-European *méǵʰ(s)ri (locative), from *me (“with”) – cf. μετά (metá) – and *ǵʰes- (“hand”), whence χείρ (kheír). Cognate with its zero-grade ἄχρι (ákhri), Old Armenian մերձ (merj) and Albanian ndjerë.
