From Proto-Indo-European *lówh₃trom (“that which is used for washing”), from *lewh₃- (“to wash, bathe”); see there for further cognates.

Usage notes
- Along with πτερόν (pterón), ᾠόν (ōión), ζυγόν (zugón) and ἑρπετόν (herpetón), this is one of the very few neuter nouns that have not a recessive accent.
