Etymology 1

From κρέκω (krékō, “to weave”) +‎ -η (-ē, abstract noun suffix). The former is from Proto-Indo-European *krek- (“to weave”), see also Serbo-Croatian kresati, English reel.[1]

Etymology 2

Possibly from a Proto-Indo-European *ḱorkeh₂. Connected with Sanskrit शर्कर (śarkara, “pebble, gravel; later, sugar”) or कृशन (kṛśana, “pearl”).
