κινούβοιλα
Dacian
Etymology
Cognate with Thracian (Bessian) sinupyla/dinupula[1] (< */ðinupula/ < *þinupula, with Lat. d- for Thracian /ð/[2]) ("bryony, Bryonia alba"). Akin to Lithuanian šùnobuolas[3][4] m., Lithuanian šùnobelė (“buckthorn, crab-tree, Rhamnus”) f., literally "dog's pumpkin" (cf. Lith. šuñs, obuolỹs), from the same dialectal Indo-European archetype *ḱun-abōlā[5][6] (f.) "kind of plant (lit. "dog's apple")", a compound of *ḱun- (oblique stem of Proto-Indo-European *ḱwṓ (“dog”)) + Proto-Indo-European *h₂ébōl (“apple”). The unexpected "centum" reflex in Dacian kin- represents the early depalatalization rule[7] which neutralized IE palatals "before (non-syllabic) resonants"[8][9] or next to the vowel *u (or its corresponding glide *w)[10].
