Borrowed from Italian occhiali (“eyeglasses”), plural of occhiale; the apheresis perhaps resulting via crasis of article το (to) with an earlier Byzantine Greek ὀκκιάλι (okkiáli); from occhio (“eye”) + -ale, from Vulgar Latin oclus from Latin oculus (“eye”) from Proto-Italic *okʷelos, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ekʷ- (“eye; to see”); whence distantly cognate to Ancient Greek ὄψῐς (ópsis, “sight”) hence όψη (ópsi).
