Likely borrowed from unattested Phoenician *𐤊𐤓𐤊-𐤇𐤃𐤔𐤕 (*krk-ḥdšt, new city) (cf. Aramaic כַּרְכָא, Hebrew כְּרַךְ), variant of 𐤒𐤓𐤕-𐤇𐤃𐤔𐤕 (qrt-ḥdšt), hence doublet of Χαλκηδών (Khalkēdṓn, Chalcedon).
