Likely borrowed from unattested Phoenician *𐤊𐤓𐤊-𐤇𐤃𐤔𐤕‎ (*krk-ḥdšt, “new city”) (cf. Aramaic כַּרְכָא‎, Hebrew כְּרַךְ‎), variant of 𐤒𐤓𐤕-𐤇𐤃𐤔𐤕‎ (qrt-ḥdšt), hence doublet of Χαλκηδών (Khalkēdṓn, “Chalcedon”).
