θύλακος
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- θῦλαξ (thûlax), θυλλίς (thullís)
Etymology
Unexplained. Like σάκκος (sákkos, “sack”), probably foreign. The suffix -ακ- points to Pre-Greek origin. The word has also been compared with Lithuanian dundùlis (“puffed, big-bellied”), but this is only speculation.
