Etymology

Loaned through an Aramaic form attested as Jewish Babylonian Aramaic זזניא‎, זזנייא‎, Mishnaic Hebrew זזנין‎, Classical Syriac ܙܺܽܝܙܳܢܳܐ‎ (zīzānā, “ryegrass”), from Sumerian 𒍣𒍝𒀭 (zizān, “wheat”). See also living Arabic زِوَان‎ (ziwān) for the term’s semantic range.
