Etymology

Based on comparison with ἱδρώς (hidrṓs), γέλως (gélōs), ἔρως (érōs), an original s-stem has been concluded. According to Beekes, etymologies assuming a prothetic vowel must be discarded. Furnée refers to the alternative form given by Hesychius and thinks the form is Pre-Greek, which is quite plausible.
