From δαιδάλλω (daidállō, “work, craft”), from Proto-Indo-European *delh₁- (“to hew, to split”, verbal root). However, according to Beekes, both words are from Pre-Greek.

In Homer, only found substantivized, mostly in the neuter plural δαίδαλα (daídala, “ornaments”).
