For the suffix, confront κόραξ (kórax, “crow”) and σκύλαξ (skúlax, “puppy”). From Proto-Indo-European *gʷelbʰ- (“womb”), the same root of δελφύς (delphús, “womb”), δολφός (dolphós, “womb”) and δελφίς (delphís, “dolphin”).
