Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *glakt-, *galakt- (note Hittite 𒂵𒌨𒋻 (galaktar, soothing substance, nutrient), from 𒂵𒌨 (galak-, to soothe)). The variant γλάγος (glágos) was contracted from the second oblique stem. Related to Latin lac, Old Armenian կաթն (katʿn), Albanian dhallë.
