Borrowed from Phoenician 𐤁𐤓𐤕 (bērūt, “Beirut”), from Proto-West Semitic *biʾrāt- (“wells”). Doublet of Βηρώθ (Bērṓth, “Beeroth”) from Biblical Hebrew בְּאֵרוֹת (bəʾērōṯ).
