βαλανεῖον
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- βᾰλᾰνῖον (balanîon), βᾰλᾰνῆον (balanêon)
Etymology
From βᾰλᾰνεύς (balaneús, “bath-man”), with further origin uncertain. Attempts have been made to connect with βάλανος (bálanos, “acorn”), but are semantically unconvincing. Probably Pre-Greek. Compare also Old Georgian აბანო (abano).
