From αὐτο- (auto-, “self”) + *ἕντης (*héntēs), from Proto-Indo-European *senh₁- (“to prepare, work on, succeed”) + -της (-tēs, masculine agentive suffix), whence also ἀνύω (anúō, “I effect, accomplish”), συνέντης (sunéntēs, “helper, accomplice”).
