Etymology

From Venetian anciuga, which is cognate with Italian acciuga. A reborrowing from Medieval Latin *apiua or *apiuva from Ancient Greek ἀφύη (aphúē) (small fish) of uncertain etymon. The ending -ια, from the pronunciation of plural αντζούγες /anˈdzuʝes/ > αντζούγιες.[1][2]
