Uncertain. Probably from Basque bakailao. The Basque term may be either the source or the descendent of the related Dutch kabeljauw, cognates would then include French cabillaud and German Kabeljau.
Cognate to Italian baccalà, Spanish bacalao, Catalan bacallà.
