Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀚𑀸𑀡𑀤𑀺 (jāṇadi), from Ashokan Prakrit 𑀚𑀸𑀦𑀢𑀺 (jānati), from Sanskrit जानाति (jānā́ti). Cognates include Hindi जानना (jānnā).
