Plural of șcheau (“Slav, Bulgarian”), from Late Latin sclavus or Latin Sclavus, from Byzantine Greek Σκλάβος (Sklábos, “Slav”). A similar meaning can be found in its German name, Belgerei and its Hungarian name, Bolgárszeg.
