Etymology
Borrowed from German Lot, Loth; or perhaps directly from Middle High German lōt, from Old High German *lōt, from Proto-West Germanic *laud, from Gaulish *laudon, from Proto-Celtic *ɸloudom (“lead”), from Proto-Indo-European *plewd- (“to fly, flow, run”). Doublet of lut (“solder, solder joint”).
