From Proto-Vietic *təm, from Proto-Mon-Khmer *t₁iim ~ *t₁iəm ~ *t₁əm ~ *t₁a(i)m ~ *t₁(u)m; cognate with Pacoh tứm (“to hit”), Khmer ដំ (dɑm, “to beat”) and Khasi tem (“to beat (drums)”). See also đấm.
