  1. Beginning of a section of text.
  2. Beginning of a paragraph; paragraph break; hard return.
    • 2021 October 10, Crystal Paul, “The future of coming out”, in The Seattle Times, archived from the original on 4 November 2021, page E1:
Abby Akari Alishio first came out as queer three years ago. ¶ “I started crying before I even said anything,” said Alishio. ¶ She was 19, and a couple of years out of West Seattle High School, where she’d spent four years feeling like she couldn’t safely explore her queerness or learn about queer community.

Usage notes

  1. Used inline inside a quotation of multi-paragraph text where dividing into paragraphs is not allowed. Thus, "Blah ¶ Blah blah blah ¶ Blah blah blah."
  2. Used as an index representing "paragraph" followed by a number. Compare the analogous use of section sign (§).
