From Ancient Greek ζυγωτός (zugōtós, “yoked”), past participle of ζυγόω (zugóō, “to yoke”), from ζυγόν (zugón, “yoke”), from Proto-Indo-European *yugóm (“yoke”). Cognate with yoke and jugular.
