Etymology

From Middle High German abwesende, abewesende, from Old High German abawesanti, present participle of Old High German abawesan (a calque of Latin abesse), but is chiefly restricted to Low German. Compare for this Dutch wezen (to be). The adjective stems from Middle Low German afwēsende and spreads southward during the 16th century.
