- (Gheg) zẽmër, zêmër, ɛêmer [1]
Etymology
According to Orel "A difficult word without any reliable explanation". Others have suggested Proto-Albanian *ghemen, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵem- (“to marry”), cognate to Ancient Greek γαμέω (gaméō, “marry”), Avestan 𐬰𐬁𐬨𐬀𐬊𐬌𐬌𐬀 (zāmaoiia, “brother of son-in-law”), Sanskrit जामा (jāmā, “daughter-in-law”) but with insurmountable semantic problems.
