Zaragoza
English
Alternative forms
- Saragossa
Etymology
Borrowed from Spanish Zaragoza, from Andalusian Arabic سَرَقُسْطَة (saraqusṭa), from Latin Caesaraugusta, named after Roman Emperor Augustus. Note the Andalusian etymon vis-a-vis Arabic قَيْصَر (qayṣar); the initial palatized consonant and other features suggests a borrowing from a late Vulgar Latin form dating to the Moorish invasion of Visigothic Spain. Doublet of Caesaraugusta.
