From Middle Dutch -sam, later also -saem based on the inflected forms, from Old Dutch -sam, from Proto-Germanic *-samaz. Cognate with English -some, German -sam, Old Norse -samr.

- moe (“tired”) + -zaam → moeizaam (“tiresome”)
