Etymology

From Brythonic, related to Cornish skaw, Middle Breton scau, modern Breton skav, but of unknown ultimate origin. Possibly related to Proto-Celtic *skātom (shadow), which gave the similar Middle Welsh ysgawd (shade).[1][2]
