From Old Irish íarn, from Proto-Celtic *īsarnom (compare Welsh haearn, Breton houarn), probably from Proto-Indo-European *h₁ēsh₂r̥no- (“bloody, red”), from *h₁ésh₂r̥ (“(flowing) blood”).
