From Proto-Finnic *üdin, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *wideme. Cognates include Northern Sami ađa (“(bone with) marrow”), Erzya удем (udem, “brain; intellect”), Eastern Mari вем (vem, “marrow”) and Hungarian velő (“marrow”).
