From Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɓɔɔʔ (“younger sibling”) (compare Khmer ប្អូន (pʼoun, “younger sibling”)) and *ruuh, *ruh (“young girl, virgin”). Semantic loan from Sanskrit वत्स (vatsa, “calf; child, boy, son”).
