From Middle English wrighte, wriȝte, wruhte, wurhte, from Old English wyrhta (“worker; wright; workman; artificer; laborer; craftsman”), from Proto-Germanic *wurhtijô (as in *wurkijaną), from Proto-Indo-European *werǵ- (“to work”) (English work). Cognate with wrought, dated Dutch wrecht.
