First attested as wermere in the 12th century. Derived from a hydronym, potentially derived in turn from a compound of Old Dutch wer (“fishing weir”) and mere (“lake”) or, alternatively, from Proto-Germanic *werm (“water”). Compare Warmenhuizen and Warmond.
