Etymology

According to the American Heritage Dictionary, "Probably from a misreading of an English transcription of Kannada ಉಕ್ಕು, ಉರ್ಕು (ukku, urku, steel); akin to Tamil [script needed] (uruku, to melt) and [script needed] (urukku, melted thing, steel).
