Etymology
First attested as De Wilde Ploatse in 1929. Compound of wild (“wild”) and plaats (“place”). In this case, plaats refers to an allotment to build a house on. The settlement was founded as a collection of illegaly-built mudhuts which served as temporary accommodation until proper housing could be built.
