Etymology

  • (Zuid-Holland) First attested as wingardo in 1181. Derived from the plural form of Middle Dutch wingaert (vineyard). The name may have been coined in an ecclesiastical milieu in order to lure colonists to the settlement. Compare Bonrepas, Kockengen, Koekange, Kudelstaart, Schoonebeek and Schoonoord.
  • (Friesland) Attested as wyngaerden in 1664. Potentially derived from the plural form of West Frisian wyngerd (vinyard) or from the surname Van Wijngaarden. See also West Frisian De Wyngaerden.
