Etymology
First attested as westerwidwerd in 1421. Compound of wester (“western, west-”) and a compound of Old Frisian uuide (“willow, Salix sp.”) and uurð (“terp, artificial mound used for habitation”). The element wester was added to distinguish the settlement from Oosterwijtwerd.
