From Middle English wely, from Old English weliġ, weoliġ, weleġ, from Proto-West Germanic *welag (“wealthy”), equivalent to weal + -y. Cognate with Dutch welig (“luxurious, lavish”), Low German welig (“happy, fortunate”).
