wash house
English
Noun
wash house (plural wash houses)
- Alternative form of washhouse
- 1944 May and June, T. F. Cameron, “The Working of Passenger Stations”, in Railway Magazine, page 138:
- In normal times many persons travel for pleasure, and from the point of view of all concerned it is better that the gateway to the adventure of travel should not present an appearance too similar to that of a corporation wash house.
Usage notes
A sense not covered by washhouse is a public facility where people could wash themselves and their clothes, which certain towns and cities in the United Kingdom provided at one time. The spelling wash house, or wash-house, was common.
