Usage notes
It is one of the few cases in Hungarian orthography when the deletion of the possessive suffix does not entail writing the resulting phrase in solid (in one word, as a compound) as a result of elision, as opposed to the regular case when e.g. the deletion of -e in [az] ablak üvege (“[the] pane of [the] window”) results in ablaküveg (“windowpane”).[1] These exceptions involve the adjective-forming suffix -i and they include (belseje →) belseji, (eleje →) eleji, (kora →) kori (or regular korabeli), (vége →) végi, as well as geographical adjectives like (foka →) foki, (környéke →) környéki, (köze →) közi, (melléke →) melléki, (mente →) menti, and (vidéke →) vidéki.[2] Most of these words may also have a meaning without an implicit possessive sense.
This term is used with nominals expressing durations, especially centuries, years, seasons (in both senses), months, and weeks:
- múlt/huszadik század végi (“of the end of the past/twentieth century”), (tan)év végi (“of the end of the [academic] year”), tavasz/nyár/ősz/tél végi (“of the end of the spring/summer/autumn/winter”), idény/szezon végi (“of the end of the season, season-final”), január végi (“of the end of January, January-final”) etc., hó végi (“of the end of the month, month-final”), a jövő/múlt hét végi.
It is also used sometimes with other nouns expressing duration, as well as locations:
- felvonás végi (“of/at the end of act, act-final”), falu végi (“of/at the edge of a/the village”)
It can also denote termination in a grammatical or typographical sense:
- mondat végi (“sentence-final”), sor végi (“line-final”), szó végi (“word-final”), and tő végi (“stem-final”).
On the other hand, it may also occur written together with the preceding word in some cases, when the derivation derives from a compound noun formed with -vég or when the phrase established well enough, e.g. hétvégi (from hétvége (“weekend”), already written in one word), századvégi (from századvég (“fin-de-siècle, end/turn of the century”)),
