From Old High German frīatag, from Proto-Germanic *Frijjōz dagaz (literally “Day of Frigg”), a calque of Latin dīes Veneris (“Friday”, literally “day of Venus”). Cognate with German Freitag, Dutch vrijdag, West Frisian freed, English Friday.
