Borrowed from French voltigeur, from voltiger (to vault), Italian volteggiare. See volt (a tread).

Noun

voltigeur (plural voltigeurs)

  1. A tumbler; a leaper or vaulter.
  2. (military) One of a picked company of skirmishers in each regiment of the French infantry during the Napoleonic Wars.
  3. (Canada) ranger.
